A Little About Coronado

Situated just across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado is accessible via ferry or the beautifully curved Coronado Bridge to the east and the Silver Strand isthmus to the south. Dubbed “The Crown City” (Coronado means “the crowned one” in Spanish), its coastline offers wide sandy beaches with sparkling sand (due to the mineral mica) that’s consistently voted one of the best beaches in the U.S. and draws visitors from around the world. Coronado boasts countless outdoor recreational pursuits including sailing, stand-up paddling, surfing, kayaking, biking along the boardwalk, and Venetian gondola cruises.

In addition to its famed beaches, Coronado is an affluent community highlighted by high-end view homes, old- world mansions, elegant gardens, oceanfront dining with spectacular sunset and downtown skyline views, and a charming main street lined with shops, restaurants, galleries, theaters, and the Coronado Museum of History & Art. Golfing is also a popular attraction at Coronado’s top-rated, 16-hole public golf course, entertaining 90,000 golf rounds annually.

Tourism is an essential component of Coronado’s economy. This city is home to three major resorts, as well as several other quaint hotels and inns. None is more popular than the legendary Hotel del Coronado, built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark. The oceanfront hotel has a fascinating and colorful past, which includes presidents and princes, socialites and scandals, ghosts and glamorous celebrities.

The top employer in Coronado is the U.S. Navy, with North Island Naval Air Station a main resident, hence its reputation as a vibrant military town. The Navy Seals train on both the base and on the city’s southern beaches.

Coronado Unified School District includes Coronado Middle School, Coronado High School, Silver Strand Elementary, and Village Elementary. Coronado School of the Arts, a public school-within-a-school, is located on the campus of Coronado High School. Among the city’s private schools are Sacred Heart Parish School and Christ Church Day School.
